DMA Files Motion to Dismiss USPS Postal Rate Hike Request
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) and the DMA Nonprofit Federation (DMANF) have asked the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) to dismiss the USPS's request to increase postal rates by ten times the rate permissible by law. The petition was filed by the Affordable Mail Alliance, of which DMA and the DMANF Nonprofit Federation are supporting members.
Direct Marketing Association Announces New CEO: Lawrence M. Kimmel
The Direct Marketing Association has announced it has appointed Lawrence M. Kimmel as its new CEO. Kimmel is the former Chairman and CEO of Grey Direct Global Network, a leading direct and digital agency, where he was responsible for up to 49 offices in 42 countries. He will begin Monday, Aug. 2, and will be based in DMA’s New York headquarters.
DMA Announces Craig Ferguson to Host 2010 International Echo Awards
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) has announced that Craig Ferguson, host of CBS’s The Late, Late Show will host the 2010 International ECHO Awards Ceremony & Gala. This year’s awards will be presented on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at the Moscone Center during the DMA2010 Conference & Exhibition, running Oct. 9-14 in San Francisco.
DMEF Honors V. Kumar with Robert B. Clarke Outstanding Educator Award
The Direct Marketing Educational Foundation (DMEF) has announced that Dr. V. Kumar is the recipient of the 2010 DMEF Robert B. Clarke Outstanding Educator Award. This award honors an academic’s overall achievement in direct/interactive marketing.
DMA Releases Digital Marketing Practices and Trends Report
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) has released its new Digital Marketing Practices and Trends report which takes the pulse on digital and traditional marketing methods as they are implemented today. Nominations Sought for DMA Business to Business Council Marketer of the Year Award; Deadline for Submissions July 30
The DMA Business to Business Council is calling for nominations for its Marketer of the Year Award. Nominations must be submitted by July 30. The award will be presented at the Business to Business Council Awards Breakfast at DMA 2010 in San Francisco, on Tuesday, Oct. 12.
DMA Announces Rance Crain and Howard Draft Will Be 2010 Hall of Fame Inductees
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) today announced that Rance Crain, president, Crain Communications Inc. and editor-in-chief, Advertising Age, Crain’s Chicago Business, Crain’s New York Business, and TelevisionWeek along with Howard Draft, chairman of Draftfcb, will be the 2010 DMA Hall of Fame recipients.

Affordable Mail Alliance, Including DMA and DMANF, Forms to Fight Major Postal Service Price Increases Announced Today
The Affordable Mail Alliance, an unprecedented coalition of Postal customers, is calling on the Postal Regulatory Commission to reject the USPS's new proposal to increase postal rates by ten times the rate permissible by law. DMA and DMANF are supporting members of the Affordable Mail Alliance.
DMA Strongly Opposes USPS Rate Increase Request
DMA strongly opposes the US Postal Service's request for a rate increase. In its presentation to business mail customers, the USPS said that mail volume declined by 36 billion pieces (or 17%) between 2007 and 2009. DMA strongly believes that a postal rate increase at this time will cause mail volumes to decrease even further, and irreparably harm the financial viability of the Postal Service going forward.
DMA Files Lawsuit Against the State of Colorado Over Internet Sales Tax Law
Today, the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) filed a lawsuit in Federal District Court in Colorado challenging the constitutionality of a new Colorado notice and reporting law (HB 1193) that requires out-of-state retailers to turn over to the Department of Revenue (DOR) confidential purchasing history information regarding their Colorado customers, and even certain customers in other states. This legislation constitutes an unprecedented invasion of consumer privacy and also unfairly discriminates against interstate commerce, as the law is targeted solely at out-of-state retailers.

The Direct Marketing Educational Foundation (DMEF) has announced that Dr. Marjorie Kalter, clinical professor, and academic program director, NYU Master of Science, integrated marketing program, will receive the DMEF Edward N. Mayer, Jr. Education Leadership Award; Markus Wilhelm, CEO of AKS Marketing & Media and chairman of Strata Solar LLC, will receive the exclusive DMEF Vision Award; and Merkle, a primary customer relationship marketing agency, will be presented with the DMEF Corporate Leadership Award.
Senate Rejects House Proposal on FTC Expansion; DMA Led Charge
Early this morning, the Senate three-times rejected a House proposal to drastically expand the powers of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) across all but a few sectors of the American economy. DMA led the charge in the fight to keep these FTC expansion provisions out of the Restoring American Financial Stability Act (H.R. 4173) as the final text of the bill was negotiated by a formal Conference Committee.
DMA Testifies at House Committee Postal Policy Forum
DMA Senior VP of Government Affairs Jerry Cerasale spoke before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. In his presentation, entitled "The Future Of The Postal Service: a Postal Policy Forum," Cerasale testified that "the expected five-percent postage increase that the Postal Service will be seeking due to 'extraordinary or exceptional circumstances' will reduce the value of advertising mail to marketers."

DMA Urges Action on Colorado Tax Reporting Law
DMA has sent a letter to its membership urging them to take action against a new tax reporting law in Colorado, explaining that the law is expensive, intrusive, and oppressive. The letter goes on to say that DMA and its members are filing suit against the state of Colorado in Federal Court, with the DMA acting as plaintiff.
DMANF Urges House and Senate to Retain Provisions Vital to Nonprofits in Financial Reform Legislation
As the House & Senate work to reconcile their versions of this legislation, the DMA Nonprofit Federation (DMANF) and a coalition of 17 other organizations have sent a letter to House and Senate conferees, urging them to ensure that nonprofit organizations and the people they serve are not inadvertently harmed by the legislation.

Two Companies Adopt eec's New Email Measurement Standard; 11 More to Follow
Two email marketing broadcast vendors, AllWebEmail and Email Transmit, have fully adopted the eight email marketing measurement standards introduced by DMA's Email Experience Council (eec) this year. A published list of 11 other email service providers, MTA vendors, and marketing automation solutions have promised to implement the standards in the next six months.

Bing Searches Increase 5% in January 2010, According to Hitwise
Experian Hitwise has announced that Google accounted for 71.49% of all US searches conducted in the four weeks ending Jan. 31, 2010. Yahoo! Search, Bing, and Ask.com received 14.57%, 9.37% and 2.64%, respectively. The remaining 65 search engines in the Hitwise Search Engine Analysis Tool accounted for 1.93% of US searches.
comScore Releases January 2010 US Search Engine Rankings
comScore, Inc. has released its monthly comScore qSearch analysis of the US search marketplace. In January 2010, Americans conducted 15.2 billion core searches, with Google sites accounting for 65.4% search market share. Microsoft sites grabbed 11.3% market share, up 0.6 percentage points versus December.
Recycling in Post Offices Expanding, According to USPS
More than 200,000 tons, and counting. That’s how much paper, plastics, and other waste the US Postal Service recycled in 2009, representing a decrease in its greenhouse gas emissions of approximately 1.67 million barrels of oil, according to the US Postal Service.
