White House to Applaud Direct Marketing Association and Digital Advertising Alliance for their Privacy Leadership
In a West Wing ceremony at 12 noon ET today, The White House will gather the leaders of the Self-Regulatory Program for Online Behavioral Advertising, as well as leaders of some of the largest companies online, to launch the Administration’s “Privacy Bill of Rights.” The ceremony will recognize executives from companies and associations that have led the Digital Advertising Alliance and its Self-Regulatory Program for Online Behavioral Advertising, including the Direct Marketing Association (DMA). The event will feature National Economic Council Director Gene Sperling, Commerce Secretary John Bryson and Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz.
USPS Releases List of Mail Processing Facility Closings and Consolidations
As part of its plan to reduce costs by $20 billion, the USPS released on Thursday its decisions on closing and consolidating mail processing facilities. There will be no actions taken until May 15, the end date of the moratorium agreement between the Postmaster General and the Congress. Moreover, the closing and consolidations are contingent upon revisions to the next day delivery standards for First-Class Mail which is before the Postal Regulatory Commission for an Advisory Opinion and then will be before the USPS Board of Governors.

DMA Releases Annual Compliance Report; Urges Focus on Enforcement
DMA has released its Annual Compliance Report, naming companies not in compliance and summarizing the consumer affairs, investigation, and casework of DMA’s Corporate & Social Responsibility (CSR) department. DMA’s CSR Department and Ethics Operating Committee review complaints about member and nonmember consumer and business marketing business practices to ensure consumer concerns are properly handled and that marketers are following industry best practices.
DMA Kicks Off 2012 International Echo Awards Competition
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) has announced that the 2012 International ECHO Awards competition is underway. These prestigious awards honor the world’s outstanding marketing campaigns that demonstrate exceptional creativity, visionary strategy, and results. The awards will be presented at a gala ceremony held October 16 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Deadline for submissions is April 25, 2012.
DMEF Calls for Nominations for 2012 'Rising Stars' and 'Corporate Commitment' Awards

DMA and Econsultancy Release 'Email In Action' Report; EEC Conference Provides Tips and Trends on All Things Email

Q3 2011 North America Email Trends Results: Open Rates Increase Over Previous Quarter and Year
The Direct Marketing Association’s (DMA) Email Experience Council and Epsilon has released the Q3 2011 North America Email Trends and Benchmarks Results, which show a 7.1% increase in open rates from Q2 2011, and a 7.8% increase since Q3 2010. Click rates remained stable at 5.5% and the average volume per client increased from the previous year by 14.9%.
DMA Urges USPS to Withdraw Request for Exigent Postal Increase
The Direct Marketing Association; the Association for Postal Commerce; Alliance of Nonprofit Mailers; and MPA-The Association of Magazine Media, have asked the Postmaster General to withdraw the Postal Service request for a $2.3 billion exigent (above inflation) postage increase. This increase would be over and above the announced inflation-capped postage increases scheduled for Jan. 22, 2012.

DMA has released its Quarterly Business Review (QBR) for the third quarter of 2011. In Q3 2011, marketers reported net gains for all key indicators, including sales revenue, spending on direct and digital marketing efforts, profitability, and staffing.

DMA Expresses Disappointment with Introduction of the 'Marketplace Fairness Act'
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) expressed disappointment with the introduction today of the “Marketplace Fairness Act” in the Senate by Senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Mike Enzi (R-WY), Dick Durbin (D-IL), and Tim Johnson (D-SD). The bill, including the section codifying the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement, does not provide the needed harmonization across state taxing structures — neither does it sufficiently reduce the deficiencies that led the Supreme Court in its Quill v. North Dakota decision to restrict states from requiring remote sellers to collect sales tax in the first place.
DMA Urges PRC to Reject USPS Request for Exigent Postage Increase
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) is disappointed that the United States Postal Service (USPS) has told the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) that it will pursue its request for exigent (above inflation) postage increases. These increases would be in addition to the now scheduled 2.1 percent increase that becomes effective January 22, 2012. This request is in error. DMA urges the PRC to reject this plan.
DMEF Names 2012 Officers and Trustees of the Board
The Direct Marketing Educational Foundation (DMEF) Board has announced the election of 2011-2012 officers, 11 new trustees and term renewals and extensions of its Board of Trustees, as well as members of its prestigious Chair’s Advisory Council. DMA Files Lawsuit Against the State of Colorado Over Internet Sales Tax Law
Today, the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) filed a lawsuit in Federal District Court in Colorado challenging the constitutionality of a new Colorado notice and reporting law (HB 1193) that requires out-of-state retailers to turn over to the Department of Revenue (DOR) confidential purchasing history information regarding their Colorado customers, and even certain customers in other states. This legislation constitutes an unprecedented invasion of consumer privacy and also unfairly discriminates against interstate commerce, as the law is targeted solely at out-of-state retailers.
Bing Searches Increase 5% in January 2010, According to Hitwise
Experian Hitwise has announced that Google accounted for 71.49% of all US searches conducted in the four weeks ending Jan. 31, 2010. Yahoo! Search, Bing, and Ask.com received 14.57%, 9.37% and 2.64%, respectively. The remaining 65 search engines in the Hitwise Search Engine Analysis Tool accounted for 1.93% of US searches.
comScore Releases January 2010 US Search Engine Rankings
comScore, Inc. has released its monthly comScore qSearch analysis of the US search marketplace. In January 2010, Americans conducted 15.2 billion core searches, with Google sites accounting for 65.4% search market share. Microsoft sites grabbed 11.3% market share, up 0.6 percentage points versus December.
Recycling in Post Offices Expanding, According to USPS
More than 200,000 tons, and counting. That’s how much paper, plastics, and other waste the US Postal Service recycled in 2009, representing a decrease in its greenhouse gas emissions of approximately 1.67 million barrels of oil, according to the US Postal Service.
