DMA List & Data Council and Data Innovators Group Announce 2011 Award Winners

June 10, 2011 The Direct Marketing Association’s (DMA) List & Data Council and Data Innovators Group today announced the winners of its highest honors:  The 2011 List & Data Leader of the Year Award will be presented to Lon Mandel, president and CEO, Specialists Marketing Services; the 2011 Ron Davis Young List Professional Award goes to Jennifer Le, list manager, Carney Direct Marketing; and the recipient of the 2011 Data Innovator Award is Rodale.  These honors will be presented Monday, June 20, during an awards dinner at The Water Club in Manhattan — coinciding with DMA’s ALL FOR ONE Summit.

“Now that direct marketing is firmly set in the data-driven, multichannel, rapidly evolving marketplace, list professionals must innovate to stay relevant,” said Lisa Merizio Smith, DMA’s director of segment services.  “Regardless of the channel a marketer employs, lists and data remain the key to reaching out to customers, donors, and prospects.  For over 40 years, the DMA List & Data Council and Data Innovators Group, formerly known as List Leaders Group, has hosted its annual awards dinner to recognize this innovation.”  (Separate registration is required.)

"The List & Data Leader Award is a wonderful tradition that remains relevant as our industry continues to recognize the value of data in the marketing hierarchy,” said Fran Green, president of SMART Data Solutions, ALC, and member of the DMA Data Innovators Group Awards Selection Committee.  “This year's winner, Lonnie Mandel, is a prime example of someone who has embraced the opportunities that come with change, and who has helped shape the future of our field."

“As professionals in the list & data industry, our most prestigious awards honor commitment to change, which all of our honorees demonstrate,” said Leland Kroll, president, Kroll Direct Marketing, DMA Data Innovators Group Chair, DMA List & Data Council Chair, and Awards Selection Committee member.

2011 List & Data Leader of the Year

Lon Mandel — President and CEO, Specialists Marketing Services

The List & Data Leader of the Year Award annually honors an individual for outstanding contributions to the list and data community.  Honorees must have at least 15 years of experience in the list and data profession and must have contributed to improvements in one or more of the following areas:  ethics, education, list practices and standards, privacy issues, postal reform, communication, and environmental concerns.

Mandel continues to serve as CEO and president of Specialists Marketing Services (SMS).  He remains passionate about direct marketing and integrated media.  SMS continues to grow through strategic acquisitions such as the acquisition of Transcontinental Direct, NRL, and 21st Century Marketing, as well as launching new divisions such as the highly successful interactive division in Boca Raton, Florida.  Mandel’s integrity, financial savvy, determination, drive, and intuition have enabled him and his team to build one of the largest privately held media companies in the country.

2011 Ron Davis Young List Professional Award

Jennifer Le — List Manager, Carney Direct Marketing

Named in honor of Ron Davis, who was responsible for creating the List Marketing department at Meredith Corporation, the award recognizes young list professionals who have made a mark in their careers.  Davis, who died in 1995, was a well-known advocate of the list field.  He gave generously to his field and mentored many young list professionals.

The criteria for the Ron Davis Award pay homage to Davis by requiring nominees to be:

·         Middle-management level or below

·         In the list and data profession for no more than five years

·         Committed to the direct marketing process as a career

·         Have consistently performed at a level above and beyond everyday job expectations

·         Have extended education or service in the list arena

Jennifer Le joined Carney Direct Marketing in 2006 as a customer service representative in the List Management division.  She excelled in her position and has grown into a knowledgeable resource for her clients.  She was recently promoted to the position of list manager in 2010.  Currently, she manages over 200 lists, and has a strong relationship with all of her list owners as well as the list brokers she works with on a day-to-day basis.  As a list manager, Le offers her list owners aggressive marketing methods and innovative new ideas for marketing their lists.   Le has also branched out to assist Carney in other functions, including implementing email blast capabilities, monthly e-newsletters, and launching Carney Direct’s social media campaigns.
