As the great data debate takes shape in Washington and in the states, the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) is taking the lead to keep its members – and all data-driven marketers — well-informed on the issues and implications. Toward that end. DMA Statement: FTC 'Data Broker' Investigation Will Highlight Invaluable Benefits of Data-Driven Marketing to Consumers and Economy
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) today responded to news that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has launched an investigation into “data brokers” by expressing confidence that any such inquiry will highlight the responsible use of consumer information by data-driven marketers – and the significant benefits derived by consumers from those practices.

Direct Marketing Association Extols the Benefits of Data-Driven Marketing
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) today extolled the individual, societal, and economic benefits of data-driven marketing during a congressional briefing hosted by Representatives Ed Markey (D-MA) and Joe Barton (R-TX), co-chairs of the Congressional Privacy Caucus. DMA was joined by industry leaders, consumer activists, and Federal Trade Commissioner Julie Brill in a discussion of the business and privacy practices of an industry segment characterized as “data brokers.” The briefing follows a July 25, 2012 query by members of Congress of nine companies they labeled “data brokers.”

The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) today released its Quarterly Business Review (QBR) for the third quarter of 2012. Despite ongoing uncertainty about the fate of the economy and its potential impact on broader business opportunities, a vast majority of respondents to the third quarter 2012 Quarterly Business Review survey said they are confident about the practice of direct and digital marketing (DDM) and its prospects for future growth.

Each year, the DMA Marketer of the Year award recognizes a company or individual for outstanding achievements in the direct marketing community. DMEF Completes FY2013 Board Slate
The Direct Marketing Educational Foundation (DMEF) Board today announced its newest trustees, Lynn Edmonds, President, LW Robbins and Markus Wilhelm, CEO, Solar Strata LLC, approved by the Board of Trustees during its Board meeting. After a four- and five-year hiatus, respectively, Edmonds and Wilhelm rejoin the Board to complete the slate of professionals and academics committed to supporting the DMEF.

DMEF Announces 2012 Collegiate ECHO Winners
The Direct Marketing Educational Foundation (DMEF) today announced the winners of the 2012 DMEF Collegiate ECHO Direct/Interactive Marketing Challenge, whose content was provided by SkyMall. DMEF awarded a total of $8,500 in scholarships to the University of Georgia, which swept this year’s competition, with $3,500 in cash prizes going to the winning student teams.

DMA Bolsters Consumer Choice with Expanded Opt-Out Service
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) today announced the expansion of its suppression tool that allows consumers to exercise greater choice over the mail they receive. DMAchoice.org, DMA’s longstanding online tool that helps consumers manage their mail preferences, is now available to marketers using the Postal Service’s new product, Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM).

DMA Responds to Congressional Probe Aimed at Marketing Data
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) today responded to members of Congress who have queried nine companies they labeled “data brokers” about their business and privacy practices. Representatives Ed Markey (D-MA), Joe Barton (R-TX), Henry Waxman (D-CA), Steve Chabot (R-OH), G.K. Butterfield (D-NC), Austin Scott (R-GA), Bobby Rush (D-IL) and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) issued a joint letter on July 25, 2012, with detailed questions about how companies acquire and store marketing data, and the protections that they give consumers.

DMA Creates 'TruST Coalition' to Fight Unfair Internet Sales Taxation
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) today announced the creation of the True Simplification of Taxation (TruST) Coalition. The TruST Coalition will fight attempts to pass unfair Internet sales tax requirements in Congress. DMA is joined in creating TruST by the American Catalog Mailers Association (ACMA), Electronic Retailers Association (ERA), and NetChoice.

DMA Reiterates Commitment to Consumer Choice in Online Advertising
DMA has reiterated its commitment to providing transparency and honoring consumer choices in online advertising. “A default ‘Do Not Track’ mechanism is bad for consumers and the Internet economy,” said Linda Woolley, DMA’s acting President and CEO. “It deviates from widely-accepted responsible industry practices and undercuts consumer choice.”

DMA Announces Changes to Leadership Team
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) today announced that Larry Kimmel has resigned as CEO to join the agency Hawkeye. To help with the transition, Kimmel will continue as President Emeritus of the DMA and will serve in a senior advisory capacity. DMA Executive Vice President of Washington Operations, Linda Woolley, will become the organization’s acting President and CEO.

DMA Releases Annual Compliance Report; Urges Focus on Enforcement
DMA has released its Annual Compliance Report, naming companies not in compliance and summarizing the consumer affairs, investigation, and casework of DMA’s Corporate & Social Responsibility (CSR) department. DMA’s CSR Department and Ethics Operating Committee review complaints about member and nonmember consumer and business marketing business practices to ensure consumer concerns are properly handled and that marketers are following industry best practices.

The Email Experience Council (eec) of the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) and Econsultancy today released a new report, “2012: Email in Action.” The study, which represents the first collaboration between DMA and Econsultancy, reports the findings of a joint survey on current email practices and the concerns of email marketers. The study covers current challenges to email marketing, the relationship between email and social media, segmentation, automation, metrics, and budgetary share.

Q3 2011 North America Email Trends Results: Open Rates Increase Over Previous Quarter And Year
The Direct Marketing Association’s (DMA) Email Experience Council and Epsilon have released the Q3 2011 North America Email Trends and Benchmarks Results, which show a 7.1% increase in open rates from Q2 2011, and a 7.8% increase since Q3 2010. Click rates remained stable at 5.5% and the average volume per client increased from the previous year by 14.9%.

DMA Urges USPS to Withdraw Request for Exigent Postal Increase
The Direct Marketing Association; the Association for Postal Commerce; Alliance of Nonprofit Mailers; and MPA-The Association of Magazine Media, asked the Postmaster General to withdraw the Postal Service (USPS) request for a $2.3 billion exigent (above inflation) postage increase. This increase would be over and above the announced inflation-capped postage increases scheduled for January 22, 2012.

DMA has released its Quarterly Business Review (QBR) for the third quarter of 2011. In Q3 2011, marketers reported net gains for all key indicators, including sales revenue, spending on direct and digital marketing efforts, profitability, and staffing.

DMA Expresses Disappointment With Introduction of the 'Marketplace Fairness Act'
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) expressed disappointment with the introduction today of the “Marketplace Fairness Act” in the Senate by Senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Mike Enzi (R-WY), Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Tim Johnson (D-SD). The bill, including the section codifying the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement, does not provide the needed harmonization across state taxing structures — neither does it sufficiently reduce the deficiencies that led the Supreme Court in its Quill v. North Dakota decision to restrict states from requiring remote sellers to collect sales tax in the first place.

DMA Urges PRC to Reject USPS Request for Exigent Postage Increase
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) is disappointed that the United States Postal Service (USPS) has told the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) that it will pursue its request for exigent (above inflation) postage increases. These increases would be in addition to the now scheduled 2.1 percent increase that becomes effective January 22, 2012. This request is in error. DMA urges the PRC to reject this plan.

DMA Releases New 'Power of Direct' Report; DM-Driven Sales Growth Outpace Overall US Economic Growth
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) today released The Power of Direct Marketing, a biennial forecast of direct marketing’s economic impact on the US economy. First published in 1995, the report is released every other year in conjunction with DMA’s Annual Conference and delivers historic trends, current year estimates, and one-year and five-year projections for direct marketing expenditures, sales, ROI and employment. No other publication covers the economic impact of direct marketing channels with the same level of detail.

Q2 2011 North America Email Trend Results: Key Metrics Remain Strong and Average Volume; Per Client Continues to Increase
DMA and Epsilon have released the Q2 2011 North America Email Trends and Benchmarks Results, which show a 16.2% increase in average volume-per-client from Q1 2011, and a 14.3% decrease in average volume-per-client from Q2 2010. Open rates increased by 0.4% from Q2 2010 and click rates were directly in line with the same time last year.

By a 6-3 vote, the Supreme Court came to the decision yesterday to eliminate a law prohibiting the use of prescription drug records for marketing — ruling for free-speech rights over a state government’s medical privacy concern. The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) supports the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the law.

DMA Regrets Illinois Governor's Approval of Affiliate Nexus Legislation
DMA regrets Illinois Governor Quinn’s approval on March 10 of HB 3659, the affiliate nexus legislation that changes the definition of “doing business in the state” for the purposes of collecting sales tax, to include the use of affiliates who for some form of payment either directly or indirectly refer customers to an out of state retailer. If out-of-state retailers with no physical presence in Illinois have affiliates in Illinois, they will be obliged to collect sales tax on all purchases made in the state after July 1, 2011.

DMA Statement on Postal Service Rate Hike Request
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) and the DMA Nonprofit Federation (DMANF) today asked the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) to dismiss the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) request to increase postal rates by ten times the rate permissible by law. The petition was filed by the Affordable Mail Alliance, of which the Direct Marketing Association and the DMA Nonprofit Federation are supporting members. The Affordable Mail Alliance’s members are commercial and nonprofit organizations. Commercial mail accounts for 85 percent of the Postal Service’s revenues.

DMA Strongly Opposes USPS Request for Rate Increase
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) strongly opposes the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) request for a rate increase. In its presentation today to business mail customers, USPS said that mail volume declined by 36 billion pieces (or 17 percent) between 2007 and 2009. DMA strongly believes that a postal rate increase at this time will cause mail volumes to decrease even further, and irreparably harm the financial viability of the Postal Service going forward.

Senate Rejects House Proposal on FTC Expansion; DMA Led Charge
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) is pleased to announce that, early this morning, the Senate three-times rejected a House proposal to drastically expand the powers of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) across all but a few sectors of the American economy. DMA led the charge in the fight to keep these FTC expansion provisions out of the Restoring American Financial Stability Act (H.R. 4173) as the final text of the bill was negotiated by a formal Conference Committee.

The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) today released its Ethics Case Report for February 2009 – February 2010. During this period, the Committee on Ethical Business Practice (“Ethics Operating”) conducted in-depth reviews of the promotions and practices of 34 companies. DMA’s Corporate & Social Responsibility (CSR) and Customer Service staff handled an additional 4,000 complaints and inquiries from consumers about direct and interactive marketing practices.
