The pharmaceutical industry is seeing a rapid change in direct-to-consumer marketing. Mass media advertising is losing its impact on an increasingly informed, skeptical, and proactive consumer audience. Newspaper and magazine articles, as well as TV news shows, lament the vast sums of money that pharmaceutical companies spend on marketing as they link this marketing spend to the perceived high cost of drugs. Compliance and persistence are low and may be headed lower with the recent product recalls. How well are DTC marketers prepared to address these challenges?
