A MESSAGE FROM DMEF CHAIRMAN AL DYON AND PRESIDENT TERRI L. BARTLETT

Dear Members of the Direct Marketing Community –

As spring beckons across the country (especially for those of us in the colder regions), hints of new and fresh beginnings are just around the corner.  That is definitely the feeling here at the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation as we finalize plans for our Summer and Fall programs and activities.

As you may know, the DMEF is re-emerging as a major source to support the future growth and relevance of direct / interactive marketing education at colleges and universities nationwide.

As an industry run on brainpower, the critical need to nurture, maintain and grow talent throughout our field has never been greater.  You can be assured that the DMEF Board and Staff have never been more aware of the need to galvanize our resources and redouble our efforts to achieve our mission:

to attract, educate, and place top college students by continuously improving and supporting the teaching of world-class direct / interactive marketing.

In fact, our actions are designed to achieve even higher – bolder – objectives approved last October by the DMEF Board.  The DMEF objectives include:

  1. To establish the DMEF as the authority on direct / interactive marketing education at the college and university level, galvanizing key audiences to contribute the most innovative resources in the field to support the DMEF’s programs and activities.

  2. To increase recognition by educators and industry professionals of the value and need for top-notch education programs in direct / interactive marketing at the college level.

  3. To bring the excitement of the direct / interactive marketing field to the classroom.

  4. To stimulate leading-edge academic research in direct / interactive marketing.

  5. To promote greater understanding and appreciation of direct / interactive marketing at the college and university level.
  6. To attract exceptional talent to the field of direct / interactive marketing and encourage the choice of direct / interactive marketing as a career.

  7. To be recognized by students and companies in the field as the source to deliver world-class entry level talent in direct / interactive marketing by offering unique placement opportunities to serve both parties.

And, that’s not all.  Be sure to mark Tuesday, June 10 on your calendar to attend the DMEF’s second annual (click here:) Rising Stars Awards Dinner in New York City.  Later this month, watch for news about the winners of this year’s coveted Rising Stars Awards, as well as the 2008 Corporate Commitment Award, held in conjunction with DMA’s DM Days New York, which is the umbrella conference & expo event to include Directo Day, International Day, Fast Forward and List Day.

DMEF Programs - Where Do Your Funds Go?

Thanks to the support of the Direct Marketing Community, the DMEF has generated significant funds in 2007.  We’re putting the money to good use, by introducing new and updated programs to help us achieve the powerful objectives identified above.  Here is a glimpse into program activities: 

Recruiting Has Started for Year II of the Direct Marketing Leadership Development Program (DMLDP) to Prepare Tomorrow's Leaders

You’ve heard a lot about this exciting new program, launched by the DMEF in Summer ’07.  We’re proud to say we’ve started recruiting candidates for year two, and very confident that we’ve got one of the most exciting opportunities for students and corporations alike – to match today’s leading talent with top direct marketers in the field.

The 2008 program offers qualified applicants the opportunity to acquire valuable work experience through a unique combination of settings during a 12-month program. Each candidate acquires valuable experience working alongside some of the profession’s most experienced direct marketing professionals. Associates interact with clients and obtain firsthand experience of direct marketing management and operational resources. Participants in the program gain unprecedented exposure to the vast variety of potential career options available in the many disciplines under the direct marketing umbrella. The program provides a unique perspective that will impact future career decisions:

Data Sets … Answering Academics' Plea for Market Data

Data is the lifeblood of academic research … and teaching!  DMEF is compiling datasets to assist professors in obtaining data for both research and classroom use. The Program Committee of DMEF has recently established new guidelines for companies donating data to the DMEF Data Set Library and Professors seeking to use that data. With these new guidelines in place, we are in the process of finalizing sets for academic use by the end of this semester.

For companies interested in providing data, please contact DMEF for a copy of the guidelines, which identifies the type of data DMEF is seeking as well as well the safeguards DMEF will employ to protect this information.   These new guidelines also benefit professors who will receive relevant data that is ready for use in a research and/or classroom setting.

Update: Direct/Interactive Marketing Research Summit - Sadh Confirmed as Keynote

As we continue to raise the bar for this event, we’re excited to confirm that DMA Analytics Council Co-Chair Devyani Sadh, Ph.D., President of DataSquare, LLC will serve as a keynote speaker at October’s Research Summit in Las Vegas, where she will present examples of best practices in database marketing. With more than 15 years of experience, Dr. Sadh is a recognized expert in the design, assessment and instantiation of integrated Database Marketing and CRM practices for global 1000 and mid-market clients.

Academics who register early and attend the Summit will receive a gift of valuable DMA research material.  Registration will open soon with details on this offer at www.researchsummit.org .

Deadlines loom for the Summit:

  • March 21: nomination cutoff for the Outstanding Educator [link to http://www.the-dma.org/dmef/researchsummit/OutstandingEducator.shtml] award, which recognizes career achievements in teaching, research and support of direct / interactive marketing education;

  • March 31: Deadline for Research Track abstracts;

  • After reading the criteria for submissions in the Call for Papers academics can submit their work electronically at the Conference Submissions Site.

The Collegiate ECHO Direct/Interactive Marketing Challenge: Offering Cash Awards to Winning Graduate Students Among Top Prizes

This year, The Collegiate ECHO Direct/Interactive Marketing Challenge offers new rewards for participating students.  The competition, sponsored and crafted by Pitney Bowes, asks students to market their personalized Stamp Expressions™ Printer to small businesses using interactive media.  For the top entries, cash prizes now are being awarded to both to winning graduate teams as well as winning undergrad teams.  (Previously only undergrads were eligible to win prizes.)  First prize is $4,000 to be split among a team’s members, with 2-4 students per team.  The winning undergraduate team and their faculty advisor will travel to Las Vegas to attend DMA08 and receive their Collegiate Gold ECHO prize onstage – with great exposure before the direct marketing community – at the International ECHO Awards Ceremony, to be hosted by Jay Leno.

DMEF is seeking corporate sponsors for the next exciting challenge:  “Sponsorship of the Collegiate ECHO Direct / Interactive Marketing Challenge is an opportunity for DMA member companies to generate a wealth of exciting, creative ideas for new and/or existing products,” said Marie Adolphe, Vice President, Programming, DMEF.
