A Message From the DMEF Chairman and the DMEF President

Dear Members of the Direct / Interactive Marketing Community,

It’s back-to-school time here at the DMEF! We are preparing a host of programs and activities to support our efforts to enrich the field of direct / interactive marketing through education, research, and entry-level job placement.

In order for the DMEF to deliver on these key areas, dynamic, pragmatic, results-focused programming is critical to our success -- today and tomorrow!

Because programming is the core of who and what we are all about, it is with great pleasure that we introduce our newest staff member – Marie A. Adolphe, vice president of programming – who joined us on August 6.

With more than 15 years of corporate experience in human resources -- with her latest position as HR director for Bertelsmann’s Bookspan -- Marie brings a wealth of experience to this position. As I noted in the announcement release, “Her vast experience in HR arms her with the perfect blend of skills, enabling her to nurture and expand relationships with top-quality colleges and universities nationwide, identify and attract world-class talent, and to recognize and respond to the specific needs of today’s direct / interactive marketplace. With Marie in place, I look forward to catapulting DMEF programs to a whole new level, as we significantly expand our ability to meet the needs of the direct / interactive community.”.

Marie’s primary responsibilities will include program development and implementation, and academic research, as well as branding and promotion of the DMEF’s programming. She joins a staff of committed individuals who will work with her to ensure the quality, integrity, and dynamism of the DMEF’s programs -- so that we’ll continue to effectively and successfully serve you.

Please help us in welcoming Marie (back) into the world of direct marketing.

We hope you’ll make a point of reading all of our news in this issue, and the monthly editions to follow, as we bring you the latest updates from the DMEF.

Before we close, we want to remind you that the DMEF will hold its prestigious Annual Awards Dinner in Chicago on Saturday, October 13, 2007. Read more about it in this issue -- and reserve your space today! With honorees Tim Litle and Draftfcb, we are sure to sell out -- so you need to reserve your space now!

Direct / Interactive Marketing Research Summit (formerly Educators’ Conference)
October 13 2:00-5:30 and October 14 / 7:45 A.M. – 3:30 P.M. / Hyatt Regency Chicago

On October 13-14, 2007, educators and practitioners will gather in Chicago for the 1-1/2-day Summit, where a wealth of current research will be presented in all areas of direct / interactive and database marketing; direct / interactive advertising; and customer relationship management, as well as papers dealing with teaching issues in these areas. Sunday's agenda offers a full day of academic sessions.
Featured speakers will include a host of renowned researchers:

Opening Keynote:  Dr. Robert C. Blattberg, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University.  Speaking on “Why Science Is Important in Database Marketing”, he will identify common beliefs in database marketing and present evidence supporting or refuting these beliefs and go onto demonstrate the importance of science versus mythology in database marketing. For example: How predictable is lifetime value of a customer and what are the implications? Do enhanced relationships with customers cause greater lifetime value? Does the concept of "zero customer defections" make sense and, if not, how should it be modified?  Also, Professor Blattberg will show how collaboration between practitioners and academics has and can lead to exchanges that benefit both parties. He will end the presentation by outlining how the academic and practitioner worlds can work together more effectively.
  • Special Topic Research Session Speakers:  Venkatesh Shankar, Texas A&M University; Jacquelyn Thomas, Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University; John Deighton, Harvard School of Business; Koen Pauwels, Dartmouth College.

Afternoon Keynote:  Sid Liebenson, Draftfcb. The audience will hear Draftfcb success stories that demonstrate today's integrated marketing communications as they incorporate consumer technology for interactive, 1:1 experiences. (This session will be followed in the afternoon by concurrent research paper sessions, including the Best Paper and Best Doctoral Candidate Paper.)
  • Case Writers Workshop
    Saturday, October 13 / 2:00 – 5:30 P.M. / Hyatt Regency Chicago
co-sponsored by the Chicago Association of Direct Marketing Educational Foundation (CADMEF) and the DMEF

This program offers direct / interactive marketing faculty attending the DMEF’s D/IM Research Summit the opportunity to learn about case writing, and to work with companies to write cases.  Also available is information about a mentorship program.  The program – co-directed by J. Steven Kelly, PhD, of DePaul University, and Susan Jones of Ferris State University – has three parts:

  1. Review of case writing
  2. Award-winning case writers present their cases
  3. Spokespersons from case companies present interesting situations that faculty can develop into publishable cases

THE DMEF GOES BACK TO SCHOOL:  FALL INITIATIVES ON THE AGENDA

To kick things off this “school year,” the DMEF will be conducting the following activities during the coming months:

  • Philadelphia Direct / Interactive Marketing Symposium / September 28, 2007 / Villanova University

The DMEF and its co-sponsors, the Philadelphia Direct Marketing Association (PDMA) and the Philadelphia American Marketing Association (PAMA), are partnering to educate top marketing professors and department chairs on shifting direct marketing [direct / interactive?]trends and the growing importance to implement marketing direct in their school’s curriculum.

This year’s Philadelphia Direct / Interactive Marketing Symposium will focus on the growing importance of building accountability and ROI into marketing programs, with a particular focus on direct / interactive marketing as the missing piece of a puzzle -- the marketing curriculum puzzle. Dr. Peter Fader of The Wharton School of Business; David Slavick, senior director of CRM at American Eagle Outfitters; and Jurie Pieterse, head of interactive marketing at ING Direct will be among the speakers.
For more information, visit:  http://www.dm-edu.com/default.asp

  • Student Career Forum / November 2, 2007 / McGraw-Hill Companies

On November 2, the DMEF’s Lee Epstein Fund will sponsor our annual Student Career Forum. This event will be held at The McGraw-Hill Companies headquarters in New York City. Students from the tri-state area will hear industry experts talk about the hottest trends in direct/ interactive marketing. In addition, attendees will learn about rewarding career opportunities, and receive valuable job-seeking strategies.

Special focus this year will be on the globalization of direct / interactive marketing, and the key issues confronting our industry, with DMA President & CEO John Greco, Jr. discussing the topic. Chair for this day will be JoAnne Monfradi Dunn, CEO and founder of Alliant Cooperative Data Solutions, LLC, and a DMEF Trustee. Over 225 students and their professors are expected to attend.

THE DMEF SAYS ‘THANK YOU’ TO DMA’S FAST FORWARD

This year, the task force for Fast Forward 2007 decided they wanted to “give back” to the direct marketing community. What better way than to support the DMEF?

On August 1, DMA – through Fast Forward 2007 – committed a portion of its profits to the DMEF, because its mission dovetails so well with that of Fast Forward, which looks at the future of the data marketing industry and how to thrive in changing times. Success, in large part, depends on attracting and developing top talent, which is what the DMEF is all about.

“Fast Forward salutes the DMEF and its contributions to our industry,” says Fran Green, president/data management, ALC, and initiator of the Fast Forward Task Force.
