Ed Mayer
Ed Mayer, 1907-1975, was an international authority on direct mail and direct marketing from the mid-1930s until the day of his death. His career as a practitioner, innovator, and teacher spanned nearly 50 years, beginning in 1928 when he joined James Gray, Inc. He later served as its president for 26 years.
During this time, he also served as president of the Mail Advertising Service Association, International, and as president of the Direct Mail Advertising Association, an organization which retained his active interest throughout his life.
He was an accomplished and frequent speaker and the author of two books. His many honors from all over the direct marketing world included the first Miles Kimball Award, The Mail Advertising Service Association International's highest honor for distinguished service, and selection as a charter honoree of the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame.
After some 15 years of service on the Educational Committee of the then DMAA, Mr. Mayer inspired the formation, in 1965, of the DMEF, whose programs were to be the prime focus of the rest of his life. During those ten years, while serving as Educational Director of the DMA, he gave much of his time and money to perpetuate a program of direct marketing education and career guidance for talented young college students.
Recognizing outstanding contributions to education
This award recognizes an academician's overall achievement in direct / interactive marketing education. It is based on an educator's record of teaching, writing, research, and speaking. Candidates teach full-time at a four-year college or university or graduate school. The Foundation's Board of Trustees determines the recipient. Awarded annually, this honor is named for the late Robert B. Clarke, CEO, Grolier, whose personal contribution endowed the DMEF’S Educators’ Conference, now renamed the Direct / Interactive Marketing Research Summit.
