Opportunities for DMA Member Companies

The Direct Marketing Educational Foundation stands ready to help you find a top-notch Intern!

Companies may offer internships to top sophomores who will soon be deciding on their major or concentration through our Rising Junior Internship Program.

Students (especially the best and the brightest) start their hunt for internships early in the year. Summer may seem a long way off, but its not too soon to get your DMEF internship listing up on DMA's online Job Bank. Remember that interns are no longer just for the summer. Visit the DMA Job web site (www.the-dma/jobbank).

Both undergraduate and graduate students visit the Job Bank, so your internships don't have to be "entry-level." Many intern candidates will have had relevant course work and graduate students usually come with job experience. Companies use interns to complete special projects, to fill in for employees on vacation or temporary leave, or to help reduce the workload during peak periods. Regardless, you know what you need ... and what would provide a solid learning experience for the intern as well.

Internships are an all-win situation. Your company has the opportunity to meet applicants with marketing, advertising and communications skills and interests ... student interns learn first-hand about your company and our industry ... you get to see prospects in action, and you have the first chance to hire the best when their studies are completed. And the increased visibility and knowledge about direct and interactive marketing at your company help generate company interest on college campuses. What better way to attract new talent?

The Rising Junior Internship Program is a summer program. Online posting of internships means:
1. Internships can be offered any time of the year.
2. You have the option of posting your own internships and control the timing (putting them up and taking them off the site when you want).
3. You can make changes, additions, etc. at will.
4. You decide how, when, and where students should apply,
And 5. whom you're going to contact and hire.

Detailed instructions can be found on the enclosed page. If you have questions, please call Jeff Nesler (212.768.7277, ext. 1325 or jnesler@the-dma.org).

P.S. We hope you participate in this valuable program, so please bring it to the attention of other company members and your Department of Human Resources.

DMEF Internship Program

How to list opportunities on the DMA Job Bank

Here are a few easy instructions and "helpful hints" on posting an internship. You must be a member of The DMA to post an internship opportunity on The DMA Web site.

1. Go to www.the-dma.org/jobbank

2. Click on Add A Job Opportunity and follow the instructions for signing on with a valid user name and password. If you do not already have a user name and password, obtain them by using the first line sign-on link or call Paulette Peach in DMA's membership department (212.768.7277, ext. 1793).

3. Once your sign-in is complete, you'll be presented with a template for posting your internship.

To help you get the kind of internship applicants you're looking for, DMEF offers the following suggestions. 1. Select "Student/Trainee/Intern as your Primary Category.

2. Include the word "Intern" in your Job Title (a required field).

3. Please complete ALL the Company Information (except Phone if you do not want calls from candidates). Although The DMA Job Bank allows companies to "shield" information when posting permanent positions, this is not an option for internships.

4. In the box for the Job Description, please include the following information. It will help students determine if they qualify for your opening(s).

  • Company Description: In 2 or 3 lines, describe your company (what you do, size, mission, etc.).
  • Internship Description: Include (a) Primary responsibilities; (b) Start date and length of internship; (c) Paid or unpaid position and amount of salary or stipend if applicable.
  • Student Criteria: (a) Level - sophomore, junior, graduating senior, graduate student; (b) Major(s); (c) Computer skills - MS Word, Excel, etc., (d) Other requirements - Knowledge of direct/interactive marketing required; written communication skills; geographical. Be specific about the skill sets you're looking for!
  • Application procedure: (a) Should applicants submit a cover letter, writing sample, etc., in addition to a resume; (b) Should students contact the company by mail, fax, or e-mail? (c) Deadline (if applicable).

DMEF Rising Junior Internship Program

Direct Marketing Educational Foundation's (DMEF) Rising Junior Internship Program seeks to connect highly motivated students who have completed their sophomore year with internship experiences that will further their education in direct / interactive marketing and create awareness of the varied career opportunities available in the field. Internships provide a perfect opportunity to introduce top college students to your organization. As an employer who provides a meaningful experience for interns, you will benefit in many ways - not the least of which is a valuable intern who may return to your company as a valuable employee.

How does the program work?

Your organization provides DMEF with a detailed description of your internship opportunity. Only internships that provide demonstrated learning components and involve working on direct / interactive marketing-related projects will be considered for inclusion in this program. DMEF will leverage its relationships with professors at top colleges and universities to help employers source bright and highly motivated students.

Students will be expected to provide a short paragraph on why they are interested in the internship and a letter of reference from at least one faculty member. Only students recommended by a professor will be presented to employers for consideration. DMEF will provide employers with vetted applicants for consideration. Employers will contact those students that they wish to interview. Employers will notify DMEF once they have made their final selection.

Internships are expected to be 8-10 weeks in duration; the exact timing of each internship will be determined by mutual agreement between the student and the employer. At the completion of the internship, students will be asked to submit a one-to-two page paper to DMEF describing their internship experience.

How can I support the DMEF?

The Direct Marketing Educational Foundation has one urgent goal set by DMA members-attract new talent to direct marketing.

DMEF accomplishes this goal in two ways:

  • by increasing and improving direct marketing education in colleges and universities
  • by providing DM career information and guidance to students.

You can help DMEF meet its mission by providing financial support so DMEF can continue to expand the scope and number of its educational programs. (During the current academic year, DMEF will conduct 15-20 programs nationwide.) Full funding for educational programs comes from tax-deductible contributions from individuals, companies, regional clubs and associations. Gifts support the operating expenses of the Foundation, and gifts are put to good use immediately. Increased philanthropic support of the DMEF allows for more educational opportunities for students and professors. In addition to providing necessary funding, DMA members can assist the Foundation by volunteering to:

  • offer summer internships
  • sponsor or host an educational program in your office
  • lead a session at a DMEF program
  • participate in judging student program applications
  • provide teaching resource materials.

The Foundation would not be able to continue without the support of industry members. If you are interested in assisting in any way, please call the Foundation at 212/768-7277, ext. 1325.

DMEF is on the hunt for its alumni. If you attended a Collegiate Institute, a Seminar for Graduate Students, won the Collegiate ECHO, attended afternoon seminars as a student intern, or went to an agency-hosted seminar, please let DMEF know where you are and what you are doing. Email your current information to jnesler@the-dma.org.
